APA suggests using square brackets for the inner text. The Chicago Manual of Style also suggests this, but it seems that it also mentions that. British style is to use parentheses within parentheses. I also found this guide, which suggests that UK English uses parentheses throughout. A sentence that stands alone within parentheses needs a period inside the parentheses to end it. (Here’s an example.) A sentence in parentheses within another sentence does not take a period, because the period is reserved for the main sentence (questions and exclamations, however, must have their respective marks!). An abbreviation that ends with a period must not be left hanging without it (in parentheses, e.g.), and a sentence containing a parenthesis must itself have terminal. The Chicago Manual of Style has some general punctuation conventions. And if your client’s writing features parentheses and square brackets, you’ll also need to be aware of how they work alongside other punctuation marks: Opening parentheses should only come after a comma or semicolon in an enumeration or list.
